Linux in a Data Center: From Theory to Practice

Friday, April 23rd, 2010 by kristina-davis

We were contacted by the ITT Technical Institute to help turn theory into practice for one of their classes.  We welcomed this opportunity to help educate the future Engineers of Central Florida.

We set up Daniel Poremba, Professor at the School of Information Technology, and his class of roughly twenty with Preston C, the Senior Linux Engineer at Atlantic.Net. Preston took the class on a tour of our Data Center facility and explained the significance of each component from the Colo floor to the industrial grade generator and UPS’s.  (more…)

BarCamp Orlando 2010

Thursday, April 15th, 2010 by kristina-davis

9:30 – Wall Street Plaza -

It was a beautiful day in Orlando, with temperatures in the high 70’s and not a cloud in sight!  Atlantic.Net, a two-time sponsor, was out in full force to mingle with industry professionals at BarCamp Orlando 2010! I arrived, bright and early, to sign Josh W. up for his very first presentation on Clustered Hosting.  This year’s event was hopping with programmers, developers, entrepreneurs, and inventors who were more than eager to share their knowledge and ideas!

This being my first BarCamp, I was a little overwhelmed by the rush of people who jumped at the presentation board.  I squeezed myself in, to politely sneak up to the board, and select our speaking time slot and topic.  Luckily, I was able to secure our spot on the board, 2:00 – Clustered Hosting by Josh W. of Atlantic.Net!  Not too shabby for an old gal.

Atlantic.Net Sponsors Orlando’s 3rd Annual Walk-For-Wishes

Friday, March 19th, 2010 by kristina-davis

I would like to thank our staff and our local community who pulled together to help support the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s 3rd annual “Walk-For- Wishes” at Lake Eola in Orlando Florida.

I woke up thinking that the weather was going to ruin this event, but I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful, usually unpredictable, Florida weather which contributed to a fantastic evening walk!  Attendance for this event far surpassed my expectations and this truly was a fun-filled event!  There were food, fun, games, and giveaways!  The best surprise of all was a special appearance by the Orlando Predator cheerleaders who got the crowd involved in an impromptu show of football skills, something I couldn’t do in heels!  Before the walk, 98.9 WMMO played the best hits of yesterday and today, and a tough competition of “Corn Hole” ensued!  I am sure some of the folks took advantage of the FREE 10 minute massages by another sponsor!

Atlantic.Net’s Holiday Gift Drive Supporting Orlando’s Russell Home

Thursday, December 24th, 2009 by kristina-davis

The 2009 holiday season has brought cheer, happiness and great memories to us all! The Atlantic.Net Team took the time to set up a toy drive for the Russell Home for Atypical Children.  It felt so good to participate with fellow staff members, friends and family.  I usually wear many hats but yesterday I played Santa which is an amazing and heartfelt experience.  It was fun too!  We designated our Orlando data center as the toy drop off location and we collected tons of toys! This Santa arrived early to the Data Center on a mission to spread cheer and load up a truck full of toys collected throughout the month of December.  Thanks to Roy for his help, we could not have done this without him!

Can A Data Center Be A Hundred Percent Green?

Monday, November 16th, 2009 by kristina-davis

The term “green data center ” can be attributed to data centers that are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly. This means that green data centers should be maintained by monitoring their electrical, mechanical, electronic, and computer systems to reducing power consumption and to lessen the ecological impact. Turning a data center completely green is not as far-fetched today as it was several years ago, but it is not something that can be achieved easily. Creating a greener data center environment can be costly, difficult, and time consuming. Most existing data center facilities are taking initiatives towards greener practices by restructuring the way they utilize their power and run their power dependent infrastructure. While newly built data centers are being constructed with their environmental impact in mind, various data center operators are also taking steps to become more environmentally responsible. (more…)
