Health Care IT - A Decision Makers Guide to Cloud Computing and Managed Server Hosting

Thursday, July 1st, 2010 by kristina-davis

Virtualization has created new possibilities and opportunities for the health care segment of technology. Health care IT Professionals specializing in virtualization technologies are now finding more attractive and lucrative opportunities, especially with the new Health Care Reform and health care IT initiatives introduced by the new Administration.

Virtualization is the technology behind cloud computing and it makes such a pool of network resources a genuine possibility.

Managed Server Hosting:

Managed server hosting is a phrase used to describe the way a hosting plan is designed to function. Managed hosting is the better way to host your critical infrastructure, providing high security and fully redundant backup power supplies, 24/7 monitoring and access, round the clock engineers and much more. Managed hosting revolutionized the way organizations established their working presence on the Internet which  enabled them to conduct commerce online. Managed hosting handled by the Service Provider is ideal for organizations that don’t have the time, resources or operational expertise to handle server operations, applications and upkeep of their key infrastructure. Organizations that have a need for dedicated resources generally choose the managed server hosting option.

Dedicated Virtualization and the Structure of a Private Cloud:

Private cloud technologies have revolutionized the way the Internet accesses information over the Internet. Using VMware, Xen or Hyper-V, a private network is set up with an operating system that uses very little system resources.

This creates the possibility to include more than one virtual server on one physical hardware server. It creates a more efficient usage of system resources and delivers content faster than other dedicated server solutions. It’s all a matter of receiving as many resources as you need. Server A might only need one core and 3 GB of RAM to function properly, while server B might need a custom-tailored cloud hosting solution. (more…)

Electronic Medical Records Made Easy With Managed Server Hosting

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 by jwieder

The complexity of our health care system has grown over the years making it more difficult for practitioners to stay informed about their patients health histories. Electronic Medical Records will help solve this problem. This method reduces the amount of paperwork involved in the process; while at the same time increasing access to these records by making them available electronically. EMR/EHR systems enable the practitioner to view a patient’s complete health event summary, historical reports and previous treatment records. This has resulted in an enormous gain in productivity in practices staffed with multiple physicians. The advantages are also evident in regard to patients with multiple aliments and in emergency medical situations.

With the adoption of EMR/EHR there is still plenty of room to increase operational efficiency, cost savings and productivity gains. Electronic Medical Records are gaining in popularity because of the paperless approach. At the same time this creates an effective demand for data centers to host such records in secure facilities. Secure facilities are a must due to the highly sensitive nature of the data being hosted combined with the fact that strict security procedures and practices must be maintained.

EMR can be handled in a variety of ways; some of the common methodologies are: (more…)

Electronic Medical Records in a Data Center Environment

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 by jwieder

Physicians today are faced with many obstacles due to recent regulations created by Health Care Reform. Some practitioners are asking themselves, “How do I provide outstanding quality health care in the face of an increasingly complex regulatory system? Where am I going to find the time and resources to implement an EMR system?” Many doctors are in the precarious position of having to manage and troubleshoot complex IT, EMR and billing systems. Keeping up to date with the latest HIPAA and HITECH compliance and security requirements is expensive, time consuming, and difficult.

Atlantic.Net believes that the business of health care exists to facilitate the practice of good medicine. Efforts should be focused on and directed towards healing the sick, not managing their IT infrastructure. As physicians in the community become tasked with the technical aspect of running their practices, they are focusing less on healing the sick. With more resources becoming available to practitioners, however, the opportunities for their practice’s growth is increasing exponentially. With an increase in patients and a decreased interest in managing their data, many are considering outsourcing their EMR and other IT strategies to Service Providers in order to shift focus back onto the patient. Atlantic.Net Dissects the Impact of Healthcare IT on the Data Center Industry at the HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) 9th Annual Conference & Exhibition

Saturday, March 6th, 2010 by kristina-davis

With the passage of Healthcare Reform by Congress, there is a lot of talk about healthcare in the IT business community.  Healthcare already accounts for about $2 trillion in federal spending each year; almost one out of every seven dollars spent in the U.S is related to healthcare.  It looks as if billions more will be funneled into the healthcare IT segment, thanks to the new federal initiatives that require health care providers to maintain medical records electronically.  This explains why almost every technology vendor out there is evaluating and exploring opportunities within the health care sector.

We sent Sam G. to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Expo (HIMSS) in Atlanta, Georgia earlier this month to do some investigating.

HITECH Act - New HIPAA Privacy Law and the Service Providers

Monday, February 15th, 2010 by Adnan Raja

I was recently interviewed by Ms. Melanie Azam of the Orlando Business Journal for her story about the new HIPAA privacy laws taking effect on February 17, 2010, passed as part of the 2009 stimulus package.  She wrote an informative article about the new HIPAA regulations, which will affect companies that service the health care providers.

As discussed in the article, these new regulations will have a major impact on companies that deal with electronic medical health records, as they affect both the storage and safety of health-related records.  The newly passed Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act applies to the service providers and accounting, software, and law firms working with medical records and medical providers, leaving many companies scrambling to get on board with the new, more rigorous privacy laws and regulations. Atlantic.Net Completes SAS70 Data Center Compliance

Friday, October 9th, 2009 by jrossiter

Operating sophisticated data centers requires expertise and proficiency in many areas surrounding maintenance, proper controls and checks and balances. Atlantic.Net has long been serving clients that require world class infrastructure with adequate security controls in place and recently announced our SAS 70 certification. SAS 70 compliance confirms reliability, security, availability and processing integrity of our core products which include Managed Server Hosting, Dedicated Servers, and Server Colocation.

What is SAS 70 Audit?

The SAS 70 audit, or Statement on Auditing Standards (”SAS”) No. 70, was developed by the AICPA as a means of auditing and reporting on the effectiveness of operations and controls of a service provider. It is also considered an operational compliance benchmark for companies with the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.   A service auditor’s examination performed in accordance with SAS No. 70 ("SAS 70 Audit") is widely recognized and represents that a service organization has been through an in-depth audit of their control objectives and control activities, which often include controls over information technology and related processes. An Introduction to Data Loss Prevention

Monday, August 17th, 2009 by jwieder

This paper serves as a primer on preventing “data loss,” an umbrella term that encompasses two distinct phenomena: system failure and network intrusion.

Firms that fail to protect their data – often proprietary customer information – not only suffer from unflattering news coverage but the often crippling expenses related to churn, Service Level Agreements and project redesign.  A good deal of the fallout from data loss can be prevented with a measure of investment that seems minute in comparison to the risks of remaining vulnerable.
