Next Generation DataCenters Solving Healthcare Compliance Issues

Editorial Team December 4, 2013 by under HIPAA Data Centers 0 Comments

HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and HITECH stands for Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act. Both acts have to do with how health records and data are handled. SSAE 18 is similar. It’s an accounting standard created by the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). The parameters of all three have enormous implications both for healthcare and for web hosting. Dedicated server and managed hosting services that use next-generation datacenters must ensure that they can meet the requirements as outlined in the compliance requirements of each one of them.

Why the Cloud is Raising Climate Questions

Editorial Team September 26, 2013 by under HIPAA Data Centers 0 Comments

As we all are very well aware by now, the architecture behind the cloud consists of extremely complex and technically evolved data centers that serve to store, process, and deliver information instantaneously over the Internet.

The cloud also allows users to access information that would have previously been stored locally; instead of being forced to access a critical file from a work computer, employees have access to all of the information they need from their favorite library or coffee show.

What is Server Load Balancing? The Function of a Load Balancer

server load balancing

Let’s get technical: Nine 1Gig paths (all connections active and load balancing traffic) 9Gb/s full-duplex mesh providing 18Gb/s of bandwidth between core switches. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The reliability of a system is measured in uptime, the percentage of time throughout a given window that a site is up and fully operational.  Network reliability and high uptime figures are crucial to keeping users happy. One important way reliability is enhanced is with redundancies – safeguards so that if anything fails, the client still won’t experience a problem. A strong system will always have multiple redundancies in place.

Newer Cloud Servers with 40Gigabit Infiniband

Editorial Team October 24, 2012 by under HIPAA Data Centers 0 Comments

If you’re starting to notice a system slowdown as your busy server and cloud connections struggle to handle your ever-increasing data volume, you’re ready to upgrade. Newer cloud servers with 40Gigabit InfiniBand vs. 1GB or 10GB can take you to higher bandwidth and lower latency (Latency is another word for the noticeable lag time between server and client. Low latency is important in user interface applications as well as processing large amounts of data backup.)

Enterprise Checklist: How to Best Utilize the Cloud

Some factors to consider when deciding if cloud hosting services are a good fit for your business

1) Determine which IT activities take up the most time and money

An internal audit is the first step in transitioning to cloud services. You need to understand where your IT budget is going, but more importantly, where your IT staff feels overwhelmed. Cloud-based resources are not necessarily replacements for an internal IT team; some tasks and functions can be done more effectively by people on-site. But in many cases, tasks like server maintenance, security patching, and backup/recovery can be made part of a cloud services package and free up your IT staff to help with other tasks on-site.

Cloud Computing Risks in Comparison to Other Data Options

Cloud Security Concerns

In speaking to customers over the years, we’ve noticed that one of the most common concerns about cloud computing or IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) is the fear that transmitting your data and storing it offsite will expose you to security breaches or other risks. We should be clear: cloud computing does involve some risks. Any time you transmit or store data, there’s the chance that something will go wrong. But we believe very strongly that in comparison to other data storage options, including in-house hardware and networks, cloud computing offers the best security and ease of use. To explain this idea, we want to make two main points:

Server Disposal: How to Dispose of Old Computers and Servers

Several weeks ago, it was decided across the board that I needed a fast computer for my daily activities here in our corporate office.  I contacted our NOC, told them what I wanted, and a few days later, a shiny new desktop sat atop my desk. I took care of all of the necessary transfer of data and whatnots and politely asked the guys, “So what do you want me to do with this dinosaur? Toss it?” They looked at me like I had a third eye and quickly informed me that there are “proper” ways to dispose of your computer. Gently removing it from my death grip, they carried it out of my office, never to be seen again.
