Bandwidth and Backup Overages Policy and Price Determination
The following clause is included in all of Atlantic.Net’s colocation and dedicated service customer contracts and amendments. The clause states the method of measurement and the cost of exceeding the bandwidth usage for each of three different contracted services.
Bandwidth / Backup Overages: Customer agrees to pay $0.05 per 1 gigabyte of data transfer in excess of the amount included in the monthly recurring fee for bandwidth contracted under “Monthly Transfer” model. Customer agrees to pay the price per megabit per second (Mbps), as stated in the contract, for each additional Mbps over their contracted amount based on 95-percentile bandwidth overage billing. Also, customer agrees to pay $2.50 per 1 gigabyte of data transfer in excess of the backup subscription for the specified backup period. All overages and usage data is determined solely by Atlantic.Net.
“Monthly Transfer” Model
Customers that are under the “Monthly Transfer” model will have a total of bandwidth transfer allowed during a month stated on their contract. The item Data Transfer will usually be listed under “Server Specifications” with the amount of total bandwidth contracted for (example: 5000 GB) under the heading of “Description”. This is the amount of data transferred between your account and other internet users. Remember that this not only includes your website, but also your emails, FTP, and other applications you may use. Check your statistics. The control panel gives you a monthly tally, so you know how much you have used. If you do not have access to the control through Helpdesk, please contact commercial billing at 888-618-3282 extension 7070. Under the contract, the customer agrees to pay $0.05 per 1 gigabyte of data transfer in excess of the amount included in the monthly recurring fee for bandwidth contracted.
95-Percentile Bandwidth Overage
To account for the instances in which the customer’s traffic bursts over their minimum committed bandwidth, Atlantic.Net utilizes a billing method referred to as the “95th Percentile Rule”. Under the 95-percentile bandwidth billing method, Atlantic.Net customers can exceed their contracted bandwidth limit for brief periods of time (totaling 5%) without incurring the financial costs associated with increasing their contracted bandwidth amount.
Customer agrees to pay the price per megabit per second (Mbps), as stated in the Colocation Contract, for each additional Mbps over their contracted amount, based on 95-percentile bandwidth overage billing. The contracted Mbps amount is defined as the bandwidth number listed in the Internet Access Quantity field on the Colocation Service Order Form. Atlantic.Net’s bandwidth monitoring records sample data points, which reflect how much bandwidth a customer is utilizing in that particular instance. The inbound and outbound traffic level for each service connection is measured every 5 minutes. During the month, all the data samples for the inbound and outbound traffic are collected in a database.
Over the course of the month, the highest 5% of both the inbound and outbound traffic levels are discarded, and the next highest remaining data sample on either the inbound or outbound is the “95th Percentile” value, which is used as the basis for the calculation of any additional monthly charges. If your usage falls below the minimum monthly committed amount after we’ve taken off the top 5%, you will not incur any additional usage charges.
Calculation Example for 95-Percentile Bandwidth Overage:
An example: Let’s say Atlantic.Net’s customer has contracted for 40Mbps per month. Atlantic.Net collects data samples for one month and sorts them from highest to lowest, discarding the top 5%. For the purpose of this example, the 95th percentile for the month was 68Mbps. The customer will be billed for the additional charges of 68Mbps, minus the previously invoiced 40Mbps of contractually committed bandwidth, or 28Mbps. The additional 28Mbps of overage will be invoiced at the price per megabit per second (Mbps), as stated in the contract.
Backup Subscription
Atlantic.Net’s customers have the option of purchasing backup services for computer systems. These customers agree to pay $2.50 per 1 gigabyte of data transfer in excess of the backup subscription for the specified backup period.
